A Fitness Marketing Blog By Allen Hill

Allen Hill - Former personal trainer turned Internet marketer and fitness marketing consultant

Fitness marketing consultant, Allen Hill

At one time I was a bottom-of-the ladder personal trainer for a handful of local health clubs here in Dayton, Ohio.   But once I decided to start my own fitness business, I quickly realized just how important effective marketing is to lasting success.

When I started my personal training business, I couldn’t afford much in the way of a fitness marketing budget.

And with all the hoopla about internet marketing and all the money that was being made on the Internet, I started looking for a way to promote my new personal training business online.

But like I said, I couldn’t afford to spend a lot of money on my marketing.   I couldn’t afford one of those expensive fitness website designers.

Hell, at that point in my life, I could barely afford to feed myself!…

That lack of money (and food) motivated me to start doing some SERIOUS researching.  I read every web marketing book, e-book, and e-mail newsletter I could get my hands on.

I devoured the stuff like a stoner with a box of Twinkies!  My goal was to start marketing (and hopefully SELLING) workout programs online to add some passive income on top of the money I made from training my clients.

So I put up a pretty simple site that collected information about the customers (along with payment for their program), and I sent the workout program to them in their e-mail.

I had NO CLUE what I was doing when I started… so (of course), I screwed up BIG TIME!

I mean, how could I NOT screw it up?  I had no idea how to build a fitness website.  And I knew even less about how fitness marketing really works, let alone how to COMBINE it with Internet marketing.  So needless to say, that first fitness website of mine was terrible.

Here’s why it sucked out loud…

First of all, no one ever came to it.  I’d given ZERO thought to how I’d get traffic to the site.  And without traffic… well, then there’s no one around to buy any of your fitness products or services.  Once I finally figured out how to get traffic to a fitness website, I ran into a whole new problem… No one BOUGHT anything!

What’s the point in getting a website and building all that traffic if nothing comes out of it?

Turns out that I was just looking at it all wrong, and converting website visitors into leads, customers and paying clients is pretty easy once you figure it out.  But once again, that led me to another problem (this time, one that caught me ENTIRELY off guard)…

I didn’t have an effective system in place for fulfilling the orders, so it took me HOURS to create the programs for my customers.   So there I was STILL trading my time for money… and now I’d gotten so many orders that I ran out of hours!

After a few weeks, I pulled the site down and refunded everyone.

The good news is, I didn’t give up.

Even though I didn’t make the kind of money I wanted to make (not right away, anyway), I did learn some very valuable lessons.   Namely, that there is a demand for (and a LOT of money to be made from) fitness information, products, and services on the Internet.

And using the Internet to market your fitness business, get more clients, and make more money is pretty easy (once you make enough mistakes to figure it all out).  After over THIRTEEN (13) YEARS of time-consuming and frustrating trial-and-error, I’ve learned exactly what it takes to promote and sell fitness products and services on the Internet.

You just need a systemized approach to every piece of your fitness marketing, from how to design a fitness website, to writing sales letters and creating fitness marketing messages that sell… AND about how to rank highly in the search engines (like Google and Yahoo).
